Faith and Learning Statement
I am a child of God, created and upheld each day by my faithful Father in Heaven, forgiven by my gracious Savior Jesus Christ, and guided by the Holy Spirit. I am amazed and humbled that I have been chosen by God to belong to him both now and in eternal life. I also acknowledge my sinful nature and realize that daily I need God's forgiveness and grace. I believe that the Bible is the Word of God and that in it, God reveals His will for us as His people. I serve a risen Savior and I am thankful that I can testify to His presence in my life each day and that I can enjoy a calling where I can share my hope and faith with His precious children. I marvel that God can use broken sinners to do His work and to shine as a light in the darkness until He comes again to make all things new.
Each individual child is an image bearer of God, uniquely made to reflect Him. Even though children are born in sin, God accepts them as heirs of His kingdom and His covenant. A verse that I like to bring to the attention of my class in
1 John 3:1, "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" The awesome nature of my God is revealed in part to me when I see the tremendous diversity and variety of gifts in each one of His covenant children. It is my goal to bring each child into a caring, learning, and praying community within our classroom.
God instructs us in His word to train up a child in the way he should go (Prov. 22:6). As part of the baptismal vows we promise to do everything we can to instruct these children in faith and encourage them as believers. Using the resources of a Christian home, Christian church, and Christian school, this promise can become a reality with God's help. Christian education encourages children to learn more about God and His world so they can respond with trust and obedience. Supporting (and teaching in) Christian schools is an expression of my sacrificial obedience to God.
Children are taught that language is a gift from God that can be used to glorify God and benefit others. Children learn that God created the world and everything in it, that He upholds the world with His providence, and that we have a responsibility as stewards to care for His creation in Science. Children learn that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and are to be cared for, so they can serve God with their bodies. In Math children are taught to see order and patterns evident in God's world. Each subject must be taught in the light of God's Words so that children learn to put God in the center, to view the world and life in the light of His Word, and to marvel at the interrelatedness of subjects and the harmony of the universe.
The Bible teaches that we must be shaped or disciplined according to the pattern of Christ. My goal as a Christian teacher is to mold young lives after the likeness of Jesus and prepare them for lives of service. Discipline should be permeated with love and must be appropriate for the child and the offense. Consistency and mutual respect are the keys to proper classroom management. Children are disciplined as part of a continual process of dying to sin and living in holiness. In a Christian school I have the privilege of using God's Word to teach repentence from personal sin and of using that same Word to cultivate minds that embrace beauty, integrity, and sacrifice.
I believe that God has called me to be a Christian teacher. Because I love the Lord and young children, I strive for excellence in my teaching. It is a high calling and one that forces  me to depend on my Heavenly Father each day for wisdom, strength, patience, and His divine guidance.
